Frequently Asked Questions

...and the corresponding Frequently Given Answers

We often get asked the same questions time and time again by our customers, so for the benefit of all of you out there who are checking out bottles ready for the summer months, but who have not ordered yet: all is revealed. (This is not to put anyone off ringing us to ask us any questions – we are always glad to answer any questions you might have!)

Why should I buy bottles at all?

There’s an old saying: out of sight, out of mind, and this is so true, especially where hydration is concerned.  Water fountains and water coolers are great for schools, but frankly many children just simply forget to have a drink, and so by the end of the day they are irritable and lack concentration. (And it’s not only children – I speak from adult experience: a hard day without a drink leaved me comparable to the proverbial bear with the sore head. I speak advisedly, since dehydration can and does lead to migraines.)

Many schools actually run schemes where they encourage the children to bring their own bottles.  That can work as long as it’s properly regulated.  You need to make sure that all children have a clear plastic (so that you can check up that it really is water they are drinking), preferably non-spill water bottle, which is named and regularly cleaned.

The beauty of buying a water bottle for every child – whether or not they buy them on from you – is that you have the peace of mind in knowing that they will not leak, every child will be drinking water, and if they are right there by the child’s desk, especially if they are printed with a design that the child actually likes, hydration is convenient, effortless, and desirable.  Plus, it looks much smarter if all children have the same bottle.

If we have a classroom full of 30 children, how on earth will we tell all the bottles apart?

Firstly – I make the obvious point that you do get used to it.  PE bags, jumpers, even bookbags: inevitably, some will get mixed up, but if they all have the child’s name on them, mix-ups should sort themselves out.  We recommend that the school actually writes the child’s name on the bottle and renews this every few weeks – you’ll always get some parents that won’t get round to doing it.  We have also found that the best pens to use are Sharpie permanent markers – and we do say that independently – which will stay on the bottle for a couple of months before needing to be ‘topped up’. (We sell these if you’re wondering where to get them from.)

For Activ-PLUS, we do six different cap colours: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and black.  Some schools run it where they sit children in tables of six, and each table has a DeskTidy in the middle: then each DeskTidy has six bottles with a cap of each colour. Then, all you need to do is label up the DeskTidy.

And lastly, we often hear schools saying that if the parents buy the bottles, children tend to be much more protective of their own!

Which type of Activ-bottle is right for me?

If you’re an Eco-School, you may well be interested in Activ-R – it’s not the cheapest bottle out there, but packs a hefty punch from the environmental corner – locking away over twice its weight in CO2. You can also customise it: picture your school logo on there together with the Eco-Schools logo and a Green Flag!

If you are interested in selling bottles as a fundraiser, often it’s more effective if you have your school logo on there – they look smarter and you can also justify a higher price.  Customise the Activ-bottle, Activ-PLUS, Activ-R and Activ-mini bottles.

Activ-mini is ideal for infant and nursery schools – designed especially for children, it has a valved lid with a hygienic dustcover, is easy grip and has a very cute design!  You can also customise these.

If you are really struggling budget-wise, then I beg you to consider doing a fundraiser: it can be very painless, and to be honest many schools have had children doing it at break times, which has been a great success in every case we’ve heard of.  Maybe do an assembly to launch it, then Art can involve doing advertising posters, Literacy can focus on persuasive text, Numeracy with money and giving the correct change – you get the idea!  Otherwise, Activ-classic is our lowest priced bottle – it’s plain, non-spill, does exactly what it says on the tin – and start from just 80p/ bottle.

How do you keep them clean?

Ideally, Activ-bottles would be washed every day, in hot soapy water, then air dried.  To make this seem a bit more accessible: they can be put in the dishwasher and then left until dry.  Occasionally, they should be sterilised in a weak Milton-type solution.

We would recommend that children take home their own bottles to wash, otherwise it’s a lot of work for the school staff to do every day.  If the children lose the bottles at home, they can always buy a new one from you: that in itself should make them think twice about losing bottles!

Are Activ-bottles food safe?

All Activ-bottles and caps are totally and absolutely food safe and entirely BPA free – they won’t leak any toxins whatever into the water inside.  If you want more information on BPA and the health problems it causes, please click here to see an article we recently published about it.

How should I order?

You can place an order over the phone, on 0845 450 5600.  You can email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., you can order online, or you can fax us an official order to 0151 608 9800 or post one to Osprey UK, 30 Prenton Way, North Cheshire Trading Estate, Prenton, CH43 3DU. How you order is entirely up to you.

When will my order be delivered?

If your order gets to us before 12 noon, your order should be delivered the next working day for the mainland UK – dependent on stock, and our couriers.  Otherwise it should be delivered the day after that.  We do make every effort to keep our bottles iin stock, but if they aren’t, we’ll keep you updated as to when to expect your delivery and get it to you as soon as we can.

For customised orders: Activ-logo, or Activ-logo PLUS, we’d usually deliver within five working days, although we’d say to allow up to ten.

Do the Osprey staff use bottles?

Absolutely!  Although we all have different preferences: I like Activ-R as I’m very ‘green’ at heart.  Yvonne likes Activ-PLUS.  Kirsten prefers Activ-mini, as she says it looks sweet!
